September Is All About Me
Yes, you read that right.
September is all about me.
It’s my birthday month, so I’m giving myself permission to spend the next few weeks talking about the person behind Applied Attachment.
And if that feels a little self-indulgent, I should probably tell you something about me.
As a child, for several years, I celebrated my entire birthday month by putting a candle in my dinner every single night and singing “Happy Birthday” to myself.
Every. Single. Night.
Occasionally, my family would join in. But even the people who love you most eventually reach their limit when it comes to singing Happy Birthday 20 nights in a row.
Honestly, I stand by the tradition.
So it seems only fitting that September should be my month to talk a little more about…well, me.
From Applied Attachment to the person behind it
Last month, I spent August telling the story of how Applied Attachment came to be.
We talked about the consulting idea that started it all, the years I spent learning about attachment outside of the therapy room, the many names and iterations along the way, and how all of those pieces eventually came together to become what Applied Attachment is today.
But there’s another part of that story.
Me.
Because Applied Attachment didn’t just appear one day as a fully formed idea. It grew out of the things I’ve been curious about, the things I’ve experienced, the things I’ve questioned, the things I’ve learned—and, quite honestly, the things I’ve gotten wrong.
It has been shaped by my work, my relationships, my parenting, my curiosity, my stubbornness, my tendency to hyper focus or not focus at all, and probably my inability to leave a question alone once it gets stuck in my head.
So this month, I’m going to turn the lens around a little bit.
I’m not entirely sure where we’re going.
And I kind of like that.
September might be about my background.
It might be about the experiences that shaped the way I see relationships and people.
It might be about some of the things I believe very strongly—and some things I’ve changed my mind about.
It might be about parenting, work, friendship, leadership, attachment, or the weird intersection of all of those things.
There will be stories and deeper meanings.
By the end of the month…
My hope is that you know me a little better.
Not because knowing me is particularly important, but because I think it helps to know the person behind the ideas.
It helps to know why I notice certain things.
Why certain questions matter to me.
Why I’m so interested in what happens between people—not just what happens to people.
And why I eventually decided that the space between attachment theory and everyday life was worth spending a whole lot of time exploring.
Last month, I told you how Applied Attachment came to be.
This month, I want to tell you a little more about who brought it here.
And yes, I realize that means September is, in fact, all about me.
It is my birthday month, after all.
Consider this my 2026 version of putting a candle in my dinner.
You’re welcome to sing along.
Just maybe not for all 30 days.
